Beer is an alcoholic beverage typically obtained from the fermentation of wort
based on barley malt, flavored and bittered with hops. It is among the most
popular and oldest alcoholic beverages in the world, produced through alcoholic
fermentation (using yeast strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Saccharomyces
carlsbergensis) of sugars derived from starchy sources, the most commonly used
of which is barley malt — that is, germinated and dried barley, often simply
called malt.
